Five Daughters Bakery East Nashville – Nashville, TN

Most doughnuts are made in a morning. The signature item at Five Daughters Bakery takes three days: dough on day one, butter laminated in on day two, fried and glazed on day three. The result is the 100-layer doughnut, a croissant-doughnut hybrid that made this family operation one of the most talked-about bakeries in Tennessee. The East Nashville shop sits in a brick storefront on Eastland Avenue, and yes, that’s a real business model: Isaac and Stephanie Meek run it with their five daughters, which explains both the name and the “Nothing Is Sweeter Than Family” motto printed on every box.

The 100-Layer Doughnut

We are not exaggerating the layers. Bite into one and you get the cross-section: dozens of buttery laminated sheets, croissant-style, wearing a doughnut costume. The Purist is the baseline model, just vanilla glaze over all that pastry engineering, and it might be the best thing in the case. The Vanilla Cream takes the same doughnut, rolls it in cinnamon sugar, and crowns it with a swirl of buttercream.

The Lineup

The letterboard keeps the 100-layer roster tight: Vanilla Cream, Maple Glaze, Purist, Chocolate Sea Salt, and the King Kong. The case fills out with minis, chocolate sprinkle numbers, and a maple glaze doughnut wearing entire slabs of bacon like a badge of honor. Everything is made from scratch daily, and when the case is empty, they close. “Or until sold out” is printed right in the hours, and they mean it.

We walked out with a Vanilla Cream and two Purists in the box. The box photos exist because the doughnuts stopped existing shortly after.

Worth the Detour?

Absolutely. It’s a five-minute stop in a walkable stretch of East Nashville, the doughnuts are legitimately different from anything your local shop makes, and the whole operation is disarmingly wholesome. Go in the morning: the flavors you actually want have a habit of selling out, and a 100-layer doughnut is a breakfast, not a dessert. That’s our story and we’re sticking to it.
